BBC presenter Bryan Burnett to take extended break for ‘hefty’ surgery after ‘incredibly rare’ cancer diagnosis

A presenter on BBC Radio Scotland has revealed that he has been diagnosed with an “incredibly rare” form of cancer.

Bryan Burnett, 59, has announced that he will take an extended break from his Get It On show, which airs weekdays at 6pm. He’ll be replaced by Grant Stott.

Yesterday (June 5), Bryan announced his diagnosis live on air. He revealed that he is currently battling appendiceal cancer.

Appendiceal cancer, or appendix cancer, is a type of cancer that grows from cells in the appendix. Bryan said it was discovered when doctors recently removed his appendix. He will now undergo chemotherapy and abdominal surgery.

When they removed my appendix recently, they discovered a tumour and appendix cancer is incredibly rare.

Announcing the news, Bryan said: “This is going to be my last show for a wee while and I want to explain why that is. Unfortunately, I’m going to have to take some time off the show to have some treatment for cancer.”

Bryan, who has worked for the BBC for more than 15 years, added: “When they removed my appendix recently, they discovered a tumour and appendix cancer is incredibly rare but the good news is it is treatable. However, I do have to have some fairly hefty abdominal surgery next week.”

‘I’m in good hands’

Speaking about what he’s gone through in recent weeks, Bryan said: “I’ve experienced the most incredible care and kindness from the NHS staff who have been looking after me. My surgeon is a Get It On listener. So I know I’m in good hands.

“I will really miss the music and the chat when I’m off. But our listeners have given me hundreds of great playlists so that will keep me going over the next few months.”

He then thanked his colleagues for their support, and said he let them share updates with listeners as his treatment progressed.

Bryan said: “I want to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to all my brilliant producers for all the hand holding and all the encouragement they’ve given me since they found out my news. I’m sure they’ll let you know how I’m doing over the next few weeks.”
